People who suffer from panic attacks know what others like them are going through: dizzy spells, palpitations, labored breathing and a long list of shared symptoms associated with panic disorder. All of them know that they are stricken with an unexplainable fear. Many of them feel unable to overcome the anxiety, and it’s no wonder why a lot of sufferers prefer not to ask for help. They are too embarrassed to discuss their predicament. Fortunately, panic disorder is not an incurable condition. There are several solutions that can ease the sufferers’ anxiety levels and help them transition smoothly towards a full recovery.

Therapeutic Options. Topping the list is therapy, which may target the individual’s cognitive or behavioral patterns, or both. Specialists recommend that the combined forces of both types of therapy be employed to treat the disorder.

Cognitive therapy is founded on the principle that sufferers can begin to help themselves once they become aware of and fully understand what the disorder really is. Individuals receive coaching to restructure their way of thinking from pessimistic to pragmatic. Among others, they will be convinced of three things during the sessions: One, people diagnosed with panic disorder are not insane. Two, panic attacks are not the same as heart attacks. Three, panic attacks do not lead to death.

Behavioral therapy, on the other hand, relies on letting the sufferers face their anxieties in order to modify the present behavior to the desired conduct. It is centered on the principle that the sufferers are wary of the panic attack itself, and not of any particular thing, event or place suspected to trigger the episodes. In behavioral therapy sessions, individuals may be contained in a controlled environment such as the laboratory or be exposed to a real environment where they will learn to take control of their fears. The length of the sessions is not set, as individuals dictate the pace of their own progress.

Medical Treatment. Medications are mostly geared towards controlling the symptoms of a panic attack. By reducing the severity, frequency and scope of panic attacks, prescribed drugs can significantly decrease the anxiety levels of the sufferer. The drugs are only effective when administered with the right prescription and dosage.

Alternative Means. In many instances, individuals who surround themselves in a positive environment show promising signs of quick rehabilitation. Many turn to relaxation techniques which include, among others, positive visualizations and breathing exercises. Some find the encouragement and help they require from support groups.

With so many people diagnosed with panic disorder, sufferers of panic attacks have wider networks, and more venues and options to choose from in getting the therapy, treatment and support that they require.

Many people who experience panic attacks suffer alone, not knowing that this is a common problem. Because there are so many sufferers, panic attacks help is widely available. Having the knowledge of what a panic attack is and what triggers an attack can be a massive step to overcoming them.

Many panic attack sufferers are well acquainted with feelings of impending doom. Difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, nausea and feeling lightheaded are all common symptoms, which are all experienced in silence. Irrational fears are the basis of these panic attacks, and often the sufferer is well aware of this. Panic attack sufferers lives are often ruled by these attacks, feelings of intense shame can dominate their lives. Many suffer quietly, not seeking help and others reach out in different ways looking for relief.

If someone suffers from panic disorders, a combination of cognitive and behavioural therapies is the most effective. Often just by understanding what a panic disorder is help alleviate problems that are caused by the disorder. By changing the way a person thinks he or she learns that having a panic attack does not mean he/she is going crazy, having a heart attack or going to die from it. Using cognitive therapy allows a person to replace his/her way of thinking with positive and realistic perception of things.

When a person is on the verge of an attack, it’s not the fear of something (i.e. a car, animal, heights) it’s the actual fear of the attack. During an attack there are several changes that occur in the body to start the attack. When one occurs there is an overwhelming fear which some refer to as fight or flight.

There are several ways to help a person deal with an anxiety attack. One way is behavioural modification. Sometimes it might take a person several times to go back to the situation in which you experienced an attack to get relief from it. Others may never be able to cope again with the situation in which the attack occurred.

One example would involve a social situation such as getting into a car to go to a party. The person focuses on the feeling of being in a car and the emotions they experience, not the consequences of their fear or the situation that they are going into. They eventually learn that sitting in a car will not cause a panic attack.

Everyone takes these steps in a pace that is comfortable to them. Some sufferers might have to make several short appearances at social settings before they make any progress. Other people may need to be forced to stay in the social situation with symptoms like heart palpitations so they can learn they are capable of getting through these types of situations.

Panic attack sufferers can also be helped with medication. As a rule, medication can control the symptoms people suffer with during attacks. Medication can also lessen the number of attacks and their severity. They can also reduce the fear and anxiety concerning a future attack.

A person can use relaxation techniques to deal with panic disorders. Some techniques consist of breathing exercises; positive visualization can be used as well. Also, a support group of other people suffering from attacks can be useful.

While a panic attack is a very personal experience, the fact of the matter is that many people suffer from them. Because this condition affects so many people, help is easier to find.

Allan Stakemann is an expert at helping people deal with panic attacks and has more panic attacks information on his website.
